Congratulations on your decision to study abroad through Rice Study Abroad! You are about to embark on one of the most academically and personally exciting, challenging, and rewarding experiences of your Rice University career. With so many important factors to consider and various programs to choose from, the planning can seem quite overwhelming at times.

The steps outlined on this page will help guide you through the process of choosing and applying to a Rice approved study abroad program - so follow these guidelines to help you get started!

Complete "Step One": Your First Step to Studying Abroad!

The 8-minute "Step One" online video is your preliminary informational session. Here you will learn all the important information to begin your journey. Completing "Step One" is mandatory for all students wishing to study abroad.

Verify Your Eligibility

Review Rice University eligibility requirements for study abroad.

Research and Explore Your Options

Carefully review the Choosing a Program pages to help you define your goals, learn about types of programsacademics/creditscost, etc. This very important step will help you explore your options and assist you in choosing the best program for your academic and personal goals.

Search Program Offerings

Our Program Search function provides a complete listing of approved programs. You will be able to search for programs based on subject area/academic theme, language, geographical region, or programs with research, internship, or service learning components. There are many programs available, but which one is right for you?

Consult with Study Abroad Ambassadors and Study Abroad Alumni

Talk with other Rice students who have previously studied abroad. Study Abroad Ambassadors and alumni are excellent resources as you learn more about the study abroad experience and research specific program options.

Talk with your Academic Advisor, Major Advisor and Study Abroad Faculty Advisors

Discuss future study abroad plans with your academic advisormajor/minor advisor and Study Abroad Faculty Advisors to make sure your proposed courses abroad will complement your Rice academics. Decide together when would be the best time in your degree plan for your study abroad experience.

Meet with a Study Abroad Advisor

Once you have completed "Step One," conducted your initial research, and narrowed down your program choices, you may schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Advisor via our online scheduling system to discuss program options and the application process in greater detail.

Explore Financial Aid and Scholarship Opportunities

Our website has a wealth of information about financial aid and scholarship offerings specifically for study abroad. Review the Finances section to learn about financial considerations and scholarship opportunities.

Discuss Ideas with Your Family

Discuss your study abroad plans with your family to gain their support. Share your research, discuss the programs you are considering, and be sure to talk about cost and financial aid. The Parents and Families section of our website contains information that you and your family may find helpful.

Decide on a Program

After assessing your academic goals and following the guidelines above, you are ready to make the final decision as to which program is best for you.

Complete the Study Abroad Application

Once you have decided on a program, you are ready to apply! Be sure to carefully follow the directions and complete all required application materials on both the Rice University and program/host university application. Be aware of application deadlines. Applications must be complete and received by the deadline in order to be considered.
