Study Abroad Advising

Rice Study Abroad Advisors

The experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic Study Abroad Advisors are happy to assist students throughout all aspects of the study abroad process. Advisors aid students in choosing study abroad programs that best fit their academic goals and plans while meeting language and cultural interests. Advisors also instruct students on the course pre-approval transfer credit process and scholarship opportunities, facilitate pre-departure orientations, and provide assistance to students while abroad and upon return.

Before meeting with a Study Abroad Advisor

Once you have carefully reviewed the "Getting Started" pages, viewed the online “Step One” video, completed your initial research, and narrowed down your program choices, you may schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Advisor to discuss program options in greater detail. Be prepared to discuss your motivations for study abroad, your academic status and goals, and what you hope to gain from a study abroad experience.

To make an appointment with an advisor

You may make an appointment online to talk with a Study Abroad Advisor. Advisors will be able to answer your questions and provide program ideas and important information to help you make decisions on the program that best meets your individual academic needs and goals.

Talk with your Academic Advisor, Major Advisor and Study Abroad Faculty Advisors

Discuss future study abroad plans with your academic advisor, major/minor advisor and Study Abroad Faculty Advisors to make sure your proposed courses abroad will complement your Rice academics. Discuss the best time in your degree plan to study abroad. Review course offerings of potential programs to help choose the most appropriate option. Study Abroad Faculty Advisors have special knowledge of programs abroad in their respective areas of study. They work closely with the Study Abroad Office in helping to evaluate current and potential programs, and assist with advising students.

Meet with a Student Ambassador

Study Abroad Ambassadors are students who have previously studied abroad and have been selected to serve as a liaison between the Study Abroad Office and the Rice undergraduate student community. Ambassadors are an excellent resource for students interested in learning more about study abroad in general or about specific programs. Ambassadors assist with Study Abroad info sessions and other Rice Study Abroad events such as the annual Study Abroad Fair, Pre-departure Orientation and the Returned Student Welcome Back Event. Ambassadors are happy to meet or communicate with any student as requested. If you are interested in setting up a meeting with an ambassador please e-mail our office at abroad@rice.edu or contact an Ambassador directly.
